Invisalign and Its Differences with Braces

Invisalign Braces Differences

In 1999, Invisalign clear braces were introduced into dentistry, transforming the field of orthodontics. Before that, patients with misaligned teeth had really only one option: metal braces. Invisalign quickly became popular due to its more aesthetic treatment and greater comfort, but braces continue to be used for a number of other benefits. Understanding the differences between Invisalign and traditional braces can help you make the best decision for your smile.

1. Braces are permanent, while Invisalign can be removed.
The brackets of braces are bonded to the fronts of teeth. A wire is attached to these brackets and is periodically adjusted by an orthodontist to keep the teeth moving in the proper position. Invisalign uses aligners that can be taken out for meals or dental hygiene before putting them back into the mouth.

2. Invisalign allows you to eat anything, while braces may restrict your diet.
You take the aligners out when you eat, and this allows you to keep eating all of your favorite foods, including raw carrots, whole apples, popcorn and nuts. If you are wearing braces, you may need to skip these foods, because they can damage the wires or brackets.

3. Braces can make virtually make any movement, but Invisalign has some limitations.
This is due to the design of Invisalign, which is put in and removed using vertical movements. If you have teeth that need to be rotated or moved vertically, braces may be a better option.

4. Costs for each procedure can vary widely.
Some things that will affect your cost include the complexity of your orthodontic case and the length of treatment. Your out-of-pocket cost can be affected by insurance coverage and financing options, also.
